| Week Five
As a matter of fact, Bill Zeller, the school principal, informed us that they are the largest school in Northern California. We did a stadium assembly show today under blue skies and temperatures in the mid 70's. Mr. Zeller gave us an hour long block of time to show off some top notch riding as well as blurt out plenty of messages about the importance of milk in the diet, and anti-tobacco messages.
Week 5 also brought two new athletes to the tour, Anthony Furlong and Fabiola Dasilva. Fab brings a new element to the shows and a little something for the ladies to cheer for when they see a girl hanging with the boys on the ramp. Mr. Zeller also brought to our attention that part of the reason they agreed to have our show was because the state testing scores for his school have improved greatly over the last two years and the students have been working hard. On that note, I would like to once again congratulate the students of Yuba City High on their hard work and thank them for making the beginning of week five a memorable one. The winds were bad enough once we got on site but when showtime rolled around, they got even worse. The setup area at Jesse M. Bethel high school in Vallejo was great. Awesome views and clear skies. We did an assembly show today and the entire campus came out. Despite the wind, the crew still threw down some great riding and skating. I must say that a lot of people wouldn't have even tried riding the ramp in that windy condition. Jimmy Walker took it easy at first, but then he just decided to go off. He was doing 9 foot airs and barspins and even decided to end the show with a perfect textbook flair.
I didn't really understand how bad the wind was until I got on the deck during teardown. Special thanks to the whole crew for stepping it up today and keeping the mentality of "the show must go on". Check out photos from this show Wednesday April 13, 2005 - Lincoln High School (San Francisco, California) Today was a huge day for the Got Milk Gravity Tour. As you all know by now, we partner up with the Campaign For Tobacco-Free Kids and talk to the kids about the dangers of smoking. Today was the 10th annual Kick Butts Day. It's a big nationwide promotional tool that the Campaign does at schools across the country. It's basically high school kids, standing up, speaking out, and seizing control against the big tobacco companies, letting them know that they will not be a statistic and they will not tolerate the lies about their products. Today's show was at Lincoln High in San Francisco. If you've never been to SF, just driving through that city is a treat in itself. The scenery is beautiful and Lincoln High School is just several blocks away from the ocean. The whole campus came out to the football field and we did a stadium assembly.
Not only was today the 10th annual Kick Butts Day, this is also the 10th year of the GOT MILK? ad campaign so it all tied together nicely. Since this was such a big event for the tour, I decided to throw in some extra trivia questions to try to stump the kids of Lincoln high. They not only rose to the occasion, but thus far, they have been the best school as far as knowing and remembering all the anti-smoking and GOT MILK? facts I threw out during the show. It was a great day and the pictures speak for themselves. Check out photos from this show Thursday April 14, 2005 - Fairfield High School (Fairfield, California) The wind will just not leave us be this week! We showed up at Fairfield High today and the ramp was set-up the best it has been on the tour. We had one assembly today on the football field right before lunch. We arrived a little earlier than normal so everyone had time to adjust to the wind. Once the show started, Jimmy Walker did a flair in his intro run so I knew it was going to be one of those days. The students took a while to pack into the bleachers, which ate up a lot of our assembly time but we still crammed a lot of action into that remaining 25 minutes. Despite the wind, the whole crew ripped it up on the ramp.
We also debuted a new announcer, Kennan Scott, today. He talked about the athletes and described some of the tricks, while also bringing the message of Got Milk to the crowd. I handled the anti-smoking fact portion of the show. That's it for today's update. The last stop on week 5 is tomorrow in Vallejo again. Its also tax day so make sure you send off all those forms, haha! Check out photos from this show Friday April 15, 2005 - Vallejo High School (Vallejo, California) Last day for week 5 of the GOT MILK? Gravity Tour put us at Vallejo High school. It was a clear day and finally the wind decided to give us a break. While still a little windy, Friday was nothing compared to how the rest of this week has been. Vallejo High has a tight campus but with a huge football field with a rather large practice field next to it. The football field and track were super nice so there was no way we could drive the ramp truck onto it. We set up on the practice field. The students all came out to the football field for some sort of huge rally that last about 45 minutes, then they all came over to the practice field to watch the show.
Jimmy Walker decided to light things up by once again doing a flair in his intro run. After the show we did our normal anti-smoking trivia and I even learned a thing or two about smoking from some of the students. That wraps up week five. Week six starts off in Benicia.
